Appointment of bishop of Soissons, France

Yesterday 31 October 2026, the Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Martial Bernard, of the clergy of the diocese of Évry-Corbeil-Essonnes, until now vicar general and moderator of the Curia, as bishop of Soissons, France.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Martial Bernard, of the clergy of Évry-Corbeil-Essonnes, was born on 26 January 1978 in Bourg-la-Reine, in the diocese of Nanterre. He attended the Saint-Sulpice Seminary in Issy-les-Moulineaux, and undertook a placement at the Municipal Conservatoire in Viry-Châtillon. Subsequently, after studying at the Saint-Paul Seminary in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, he obtained a licentiate in theology, specializing in catechetical and practical theology at the Institut Catholique de Paris.

He was ordained a priest on 25 June 2005.

He has held the following offices: student priest, assigned to the vicariate forane in Brétigny (2005–2006); diocesan delegate for the pastoral care of altar servers (2005–2009); parish priest in solidum in the vicariate forane of Brétigny (2006–2008);

diocesan delegate for the vocations service and member of the Council for the Protection of Catholic Education (2008–2011); member of the College of Consultors (since 2009); parish priest in solidum and vicar forane of Brétigny (2009–2014); secretary of the Presbyteral Council (2012–2015); parish priest in solidum and vicar forane of Évry-Corbeil-Essonnes and rector of Évry Cathedral (2014–2018); episcopal vicar for Catholic education and diocesan delegate for the formation of seminarians for the ministries (2015–2018); vicar general and head of the Northern, South-Eastern and South-Western Vicariates (2018–2021); vicar general and moderator of the Curia of Évry; member of the diocesan Council for Economic Affairs, the parish Mutual Aid Fund, the Board of Directors, the General Assembly and the Friends of the Cathedral Association (since 2018); ex officio member of the Presbyteral Council (2018–2025); coordinator of the heads of pastoral sectors (since 2021); and head of the fidei donum programme for foreign priests (2021–2022). He is currently also responsible for the permanent diaconate, childhood catechesis, ecumenism, pilgrimages, relations with Judaism, and prison and hospital chaplaincies.

Promulgation of Decrees of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints

During the audience granted to His Eminence Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints on 24/10/2026, the Supreme Pontiff authorized the aforementioned Dicastery to promulgate the Decrees regarding the heroic virtues of six Servants of God, paving the way for each servant of God to be proclaimed Venerable.

- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Friedrich Kaiser Depel, first prelate of the territorial prelature of Caravelí, titular bishop of Berrea, of the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, founder of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Jesus, Word and Victim, born on 24 May 1903 in Dülmen, Germany, and died on 26 September 1993 in Lima, Peru;

- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Domenico Pogliani, diocesan priest, founder of the Holy Family Institute, born on 18 December 1838 in Milan, Italy, and died on 25 July 1921 in Arizzano, Italy;

- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Alessandro Vitetti, diocesan priest, born on 12 October 1915 in Cirò, Italy, and died on 24 February 1995 in Cariati, Italy;

- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Daniele di San Giovanni Rotondo (né Michele Natale), professed religious of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, born on 11 March 1919 in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy, and died there on 6 July 1994;

- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Margarita Bavosi, known as “Luminosa”, lay faithful, consecrated member of the Work of Mary (Focolare Movement), born on 19 September 1941 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and died on 7 March 1985 in Albano Laziale, Italy.

Holy See and Honduras Sign Bilateral Agreement

The Holy See and the Republic of Honduras have signed a bilateral agreement aimed at strengthening their existing relations, safeguarding the Church’s legal status and promoting collaboration in support of the common good. 

The agreement, entitled Tratado entre la Santa Sede y la República de Honduras, was signed on Thursday, 22 October, at 9:30 a.m. in the Hall of Treaties of the Vatican Apostolic Palace by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of His Holiness, and Mr. Nasry Juan Asfura Zablah, President of the Republic of Honduras. 

On behalf of the Holy See, The signing ceremony was attended by the following:

Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations; The Reverend Msgr. Javier Domingo Fernández González, Head of Protocol of the Secretariat of State; The Reverend Msgr. Carlos Díaz Paniagua, Official of the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations and the Reverend Msgr. Francisco Javier Díaz Tenza, Official of the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations. 

Representatives of Honduras included Mireya Agüero de Corrales, Secretary of State for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation; Juan Carlos García Medina, Minister of the Presidency; and Gilliam Noemí Gómez Guifarro, Ambassador of Honduras to the Holy See. 

Comprising 25 articles, the agreement seeks to strengthen religious freedom, including freedom of worship, and guarantee the Church’s autonomy in carrying out her mission. In accordance with the Second Vatican Council’s Declaration Dignitatis Humanae, it reaffirms the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, in line with international human rights instruments. 

The agreement recognizes the Church’s right to govern herself according to her own laws and freely appoint ministers of worship. It also provides for conscientious objection, safeguards the inviolability of the sacramental seal and protects the confidentiality of pastoral workers. 

Furthermore, it recognizes the Church’s right to establish educational and charitable institutions and provide spiritual assistance and pastoral care in social care, educational, healthcare and prison facilities, whether public or private. It also facilitates pastoral care for members of the armed forces and police.

The agreement will enter into force following the completion of the ratification procedures required by the respective legal systems and the exchange of the instruments of ratification. 

On the sidelines of the signing ceremony, the two parties held a cordial discussion, highlighting the Church’s contribution to Honduras’ human, social and cultural development. They also exchanged views on issues of common interest at regional and international levels.

 

Pope Leo XIV Appoints Leandro Machado Silvestre as Bishop of Guajará-Mirim, Brazil

The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has appointed Reverend Leandro Machado Silvestre, a priest of the Diocese of Mogi das Cruzes in Brazil, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Guajará-Mirim, today on 21 October 2026.

At the time of his appointment, Bishop-elect Silvestre was serving as a fidei donum priest of the Archdiocese of Porto Velho, where he held the positions of Vicar General and Parish Priest of São Cristóvão.

Biography of Bishop-elect Leandro Machado Silvestre

Leandro Machado Silvestre was born on 7 April 1978 in Itaquaquecetuba, within the Diocese of Mogi das Cruzes, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. He studied philosophy and theology at the Paulo VI Faculty in Mogi das Cruzes.

He was ordained a priest on 28 March 2004 and incardinated into the Diocese of Mogi das Cruzes.

Throughout his priestly ministry, he has held several pastoral and administrative responsibilities. In 2004, he served as vice-rector of the Philosophy and Theology Seminary in Mogi das Cruzes before becoming its rector in 2005, a position he held until 2014.

He also served as parish vicar in 2004 and later as parish administrator of São Pedro Apóstolo in César de Souza, São Paulo, from 2006 to 2014. In 2006, he served as parish priest of São Benedito, also in César de Souza.

From 2014 to 2015, he was the diocesan bursar and procurator. He subsequently served as parish priest of Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Mogi das Cruzes from 2014 to 2023. Between 2016 and 2023, he also served as parish priest in solidum of Santos Apóstolos in Itaquaquecetuba, São Paulo.

In 2023, he began serving as a fidei donum priest in the Archdiocese of Porto Velho, in the State of Rondônia. Since then, he has served as parish priest of São Cristóvão. In 2024, he was appointed spiritual director of the major seminary, and in January 2026, he became Vicar General of the Archdiocese.

His appointment as Bishop of Guajará-Mirim marks a new chapter in his pastoral ministry and service to the Catholic Church in Brazil.

Some facts about St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina - Fr. Ugochukwu Ugwoke

He was a stigmatist: On Sept. 20, 1918, Padre Pio received the visible wounds of Christ known as stigmata, while praying in a church. The wounds were on his hands, feet and side, corresponding to the wounds suffered by Jesus during his crucifixion. 

2.  The stigmata had a distinct aroma: The blood from his stigmata smelled of floral perfume and was referred to as the odor of sanctity. 

3.  Padre Pio heard confessions 12 to 15 hours a day: Some penitents waited two weeks just to visit him in the confessionial. Padre Pio could also read the hearts of penitents, reminding them of sins that were forgotten or omitted. 

4.  Padre Pio suffered attacks from the devil on a consistent basis: Right from a young age, the devil appeared to him under many different forms: as a big black cat, wild and threatening, or as a repulsive animal, in the clear intention to frighten him; under the appearance of naked and provocative young girls who danced obscene dances, obviously to test the chastity of the young priest. The worst was when the Devil took on the appearance of his spiritual director, or posed as Jesus, the Virgin Mary or St. Francis. 

5.     He had the gift of bilocation, that is, being in two places at once: Multiple eyewitness accounts attest to the ability of Padre Pio to be in multiple places at once. Fellow friars remember seeing him in prayer outside when they knew he was still in his room. Some accounts come from others who claim to have seen him on different continents all over the world. 

6.     Before dying at the age of 81, all his wounds healed without any trace of scars, just as he had foretold they would 50 years before that time.

The Priest's 11 silent prayers at Mass - Fr. Ugochukwu Ugwoke, ISch

If you have seated closer to the altar during the celebration of the Mass, you must have noticed that the priest says some prayers quietly (or in a low tone) at different points in time during mass. These are called the silent prayers of the priest. There are eleven of such prayers that are more like private prayers for only the priest to pray during mass and they all have profound meanings. 

1.    Before Proclaiming the Gospel 

When a deacon is not present, the priest will bow before the altar, quietly praying: Cleanse my heart and lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim the Gospel. After this, the priest proceeds to the pulpit to proclaim the Gospel. 

2.    After Proclaiming the Gospel 

At the end of the Gospel, the priest kisses the book of the Gospel, saying quietly: Through the words of the Gospel, may our sins be wiped away. 

3.    Holding the Paten with the Bread

The priest holding the paten with bread, slightly raised, says is a low voice: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you; fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. In case the offertory chant is not sung, the priest does say these words aloud and the people respond: Blessed be God for ever. 

4.    As the Priest Pours Wine and Little Water in the Chalice 

During the offertory, the priest pours wine and little water in the chalice. While doing this sacred action, the priest or the deacon silently says: By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. 

5.    Holding the Chalice with Wine

The priest raising the chalice with wine offers this prayer: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you; fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. Again, if the offertory chant is not sung, the priest can say the prayer aloud. 

6.    Before Washing his Hands 

After bread and wine are prepared, and before washing the hands, the priest, bowing profoundly, prays: With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God. 

7.    As the Priest Washes his Hands 

The priest standing side of the altar washes his hands, saying quietly: Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. (My altar servers do hear me say this particular prayer). 

8.    After the Sign of Peace 

As the priest finishes the sign of the peace, he takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and drops a small piece of it in the chalice, saying: May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it. 

9.    After the Invocation of Lamb of God 

The priest will join hands and say quietly: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who, by the will of the Father and the work of the Holy Spirit, through your Death gave life to the world, free me by this, your most holy Body and Blood, from all my sins and from every evil; keep me always faithful to your commandments and never let me be parted from you. 

 OR

May the receiving of your Body and Blood, Lord Jesus Christ, not bring me to judgment and condemnation, but through your loving mercy be for me protection in mind and body and a healing remedy. 

10. Priest Before Consuming the Body and Blood of Christ 

Before consuming the Body of Christ, the priest says silently: May the Body of Christ keep me safe for eternal life. Similarly, before drinking the Blood of Christ, the priest will say: May the Blood of Christ keep me safe for eternal life. 

11. As the Priest Purifies the Sacred Vessels 

The priest carries out the purification, quietly saying: What has passed our lips as food, O Lord, may we possess in purity of heart that what has been given to us in time may be our healing for eternity.

Bujumbura : les Dominicains célèbrent Saint Dominique, ordonnent trois prêtres et célèbrent jubilés

Bujumbura, 8 août 2026: Les Dominicains, également appelés Frères Prêcheurs du Vicariat du Burundi et du Rwanda, ont célébré ce samedi 8 août 2026 la fête patronale de Saint Dominique, fondateur de l’Ordre des Prêcheurs. La célébration a été marquée par plusieurs événements majeurs dans la vie de la famille dominicaine : l’ordination sacerdotale de trois frères, la profession solennelle des vœux de deux frères, le renouvellement des vœux, ainsi que la célébration de jubilés sacerdotaux.

La célébration eucharistique s’est déroulée à la chapelle des Dominicains de Kinanira IV, à Bujumbura, sous la présidence de S.E. Mgr Emmanuel Ntakarutimana, Frère Dominicain et Évêque de Bubanza, mandaté par l’Archevêque de Bujumbura.

Cette célébration a réuni les membres des communautés dominicaines francophone et anglophone du Vicariat du Burundi et du Rwanda, ainsi que de nombreux fidèles venus partager ce moment important de prière et de communion fraternelle.

Trois nouveaux prêtres ordonnés

Au cours de la célébration, trois frères dominicains ont reçu le sacrement de l’Ordre et ont été ordonnés prêtres. Il s’agit de :

• Frère Prime Nsavyimana ;
• Frère Silas Nizigiyimana ;
• Frère Emmanuel-Noel Nsanzerugeze Nsanzurwimo.

Cette ordination constitue une nouvelle étape dans leur vocation et leur engagement au service de l’Église et de l’Ordre des Prêcheurs.

Deux frères font leur profession solennelle

La célébration a également été marquée par la profession solennelle des vœux religieux et la promesse d’obéissance à Dieu de deux frères dominicains : Frère Audace Kwizera et Frère Frédéric Ndengeyingoma.

Par cet engagement solennel, les deux religieux ont renouvelé leur disponibilité à suivre le Christ au sein de l’Ordre des Prêcheurs et à consacrer leur vie au service de Dieu, de l’Église et de leurs frères et sœurs. Le programme de la célébration comprenait également le renouvellement des vœux de plusieurs membres de la communauté dominicaine.

Deux jubilés sacerdotaux célébrés

La journée a été particulièrement significative pour deux prêtres dominicains qui ont rendu grâce pour les années consacrées au ministère sacerdotal. Frère Liboire Kagabo a célébré son jubilé d’or de l’ordination sacerdotale, marquant ainsi 50 années de sacerdoce.

De son côté, Frère Symphorien Ntibagirirwa, Prieur du Couvent Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin de Bujumbura, a célébré son jubilé d’argent de l’ordination sacerdotale, marquant 25 années de sacerdoce.Ces jubilés ont constitué un moment privilégié d’action de grâce pour les années de service consacrées à l’Église et à la mission dominicaine.

Une célébration placée sous le signe de la vocation et de la mission

La fête de Saint Dominique a ainsi offert à la famille dominicaine du Vicariat du Burundi et du Rwanda une occasion de célébrer à la fois la vocation sacerdotale, la vie religieuse consacrée, la fidélité aux engagements et la mission d’évangélisation.

À travers l’ordination de trois nouveaux prêtres, la profession solennelle de deux frères et les jubilés sacerdotaux, cette célébration témoigne de la continuité de la vocation dominicaine et de l’engagement des Frères Prêcheurs au service de l’Église dans la région.

La célébration de la fête patronale de Saint Dominique à Bujumbura restera ainsi comme un moment important de prière, d’action de grâce et de communion fraternelle pour les Dominicains du Vicariat du Burundi et du Rwanda.

Cyangugu 2026/2027: Menya aho abapadiri bazakorera ubutumwa

Umwepiskopi wa Diyosezi ya Cyangugu Myr. Sinayobye Edouard  yatanze ubutumwa ku basaseridoti b’iyi diyosezi mu byiciro bitandukanye. 

Diyosezi ya Cyangugu yashinzwe na Mutagatifu Papa Yohani Pawulo wa II, kuwa 14/11/1981, ibyawe na Diyosezi ya Nyundo. Ni Diyosezi ifite ubuso bungana na 1,125 Km2 butuwe, ahasigaye hakaba Parike y’igihugu ya Nyungwe n’ikiyaga cya Kivu.

Burundi: L’Archidiocèse de Bujumbura annonce les candidats aux ordinations sacerdotales et diaconales 2026

L’Archidiocèse de Bujumbura a officiellement publié la liste des candidats qui recevront les ordres sacrés en 2026.
L’annonce, faite par la Chancellerie de l’Archidiocèse, a été lue dans toutes les messes dominicales à partir du 28 juin 2026.

La célébration des ordinations sacerdotales et diaconales se tiendra le samedi 18 juillet 2026 à la paroisse Buterere, dans une célébration eucharistique qui réunira les fidèles, les familles des ordinands, les prêtres, les religieux et les religieuses, ainsi que de nombreux invités venus accompagner les futurs ministres de l’Église. 

Quatorze nouveaux prêtres pour l’Église 

Au cours de cette célébration, quatorze diacres seront ordonnés prêtres, dont deux Salésiens de Don Bosco. Ces nouveaux prêtres proviennent de différentes paroisses de l’Archidiocèse et ont achevé leur parcours de formation en vue du sacerdoce.

Un appel à la prière

À travers ce communiqué, l’Archidiocèse de Bujumbura invite tous les fidèles à accompagner ces futurs prêtres et diacres par la prière durant leur temps de préparation, afin qu’ils répondent avec fidélité à l’appel du Seigneur et exercent leur futur ministère avec amour, humilité et dévouement au service de l’Église et du peuple de Dieu.

La célébration du 18 juillet 2026 constituera un moment de grande joie pour toute l’Église de Bujumbura, marquant l’accueil de nouveaux ouvriers dans la vigne du Seigneur.
